Grants for adaptations or repairs to a property

Improvement and Repair Grants are available from local authorities to help ensure that everyone has a home that meets the Tolerable Standard, is suitable for their needs and in a good state of repair. Responsibility for maintaining private housing lies first with the owner, but grants are available to help those who do not have sufficient resources to do this.

If your client wants to apply for a grant, they must contact their local authority. It is up to the council to decide whether to give a grant in each individual case, taking into account local priorities and other demands on its resources.

The Scottish Executive publishes an Applicant's Guide to Improvement and Repair Grants for Private Housing. They also provide an online calculator that can give potential applicants an idea of the percentage grant they are likely to receive.

In rare cases, a local authority's social work department may supply additional grant for adaptation works for a disabled person where the cost is high.
